My name is Anthony Thai and I am a medical student at Stanford University School of Medicine. I will be coordinating the Immersion in Community Medicine (ICM) program this year along with two undergraduate students at Stanford University, Vivian Lou and Kevin Tang. Vivian, Kevin and I have previously reached out to schools in your school district to recruit high school students for our program, and we hope to extend this opportunity to more high school students so that they may learn more about community medicine.

We are now starting our Summer recruitment cycle.

As an introduction, our program is run through Stanford's Pacific Free Clinic, a student-run health clinic that provides free health assessments with a focus on cardiovascular disease for low-income, uninsured adults in the San Jose area. A part of its mission is to provide students interested in health professions with an educational experience that involves practicing culturally competent preventive medicine. We are targeting rising sophomores, juniors and seniors with satisfactory academic standing and with a demonstrated interest in learning about the field of medicine. This program asks for a commitment of five Saturdays at Pacific Free Clinic, in which the selected students will be able to shadow Stanford physicians, medical students, and undergraduates in a clinic setting, discuss clinical cases and health care policies, and learn basic aspects of the physical exam. We are currently recruiting students for our Summer session, which will run June 30th through July 28th. The application deadline is June 16th.

The application itself needs to be submitted online at this link:

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (athai17@stanford.edu). Thank you for your time and help!

April 2, 2018

Good afternoon Parents and Guardians:

Although the Renaissance Faire has been a long standing tradition here at Santa Teresa, our participating teachers have worked hard to adapt the project to tie in beautifully with our new Common Core Standards. Throughout the process, students engage in 21st Century skills that are cross-curricular in nature. They will utilize concepts from Economics, Mathematics, World History, Art, Drama, Multi-Media, and Language Arts. From building a business plan, to making sure that their diction is historically accurate, the students demonstrate an advanced comprehension of planning and successfully executing an event attended by hundreds of people.  By the end of the project, students feel accomplished and excited about the skills and knowledge they have gained. Many who come back to visit tell us that the Renaissance Faire was one of the more profound, enlightening, and engaging experiences that they had in their time at ST.

This year's Renaissance Fair, organized by our English 1A classes, is on Friday, May 11.  The Renaissance Fair is a culminating activity that challenges students to collaborate, critically think, be creative, and communicate with the Renaissance period as a theme.  Students typically dress up, set up booths, develop a business plan to "sell" their Ren Faire type products, and entertain their peers and elementary school visitors throughout the day.  With an effort to challenge the teams of students to develop the best business plans and attract as many "customers" as possible, we are in need of a variety of raffle prizes (gift cards, tickets, tech toys, and other stuff teenagers like).  For every "customer" who buys a team's product, the students receive a raffle ticket.  The more they "sell," the more tickets they receive to enter the raffle.  All students involved with the Ren Faire have a chance at winning, ultimately based on the success of their teams.

If you are able, please donate gift cards, tickets, etc. to my office.  All of the donations received will go directly to the Ren Faire project.  If needed, we can also give you a donation letter to use for next year's taxes.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Greg Louie, Principal

Greetings Santa Teresa High School students,

I hope you enjoyed a relaxing break and a very Happy New Year!

We are already at the end of our third week of the New Year and for many of us the well-intended mindful and kind thoughts we may have felt during the break towards others and ourselves starts to crumble. We might already lost sight of some of our great new years resolutions and heading back into feeling stressed maybe even frustrated, anxious, or sad.

I am excited to share with you our new:

Mindful Monday Lunch Break at 12:40pm

at the Student Family Center, Room 802

You are invited to join us for a 5 minute quiet Mindful sit where we try to stay in the present moment and pay attention to our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, or surrounding environment.

Mindfulness is a scientifically based approach to develop and improve:

* Focused attention, with improved performance on objective tasks

* Emotional regulation, with moving from reactivity to thoughtful response

* Compassion towards others and greater self-compassion

* Feelings of e.g. anxiety and distress through calming deep breathe and focus on the present moment

I am trained in teaching mindfulness to students through an organization called Mindful Schools and participate at the moment in a yearlong program at Mindful Schools to even deepen my knowledge about Mindfulness and receive certification.

If you have any questions about our mindful sit during Lunch Break, please do not hesitate to contact me in the Student Family Center on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays, or by email. I am happy to be in touch with you.

Kind regards,

Daniela Ohlmeier, MSW, PPSC

ST Students and Families,

Need somewhere to bring your used & unwanted items? Want to begin your 2018 by doing a good deed to the community?

The Santa Teresa Class of 2020 is partnering with Goodwill of Silicon Valley to raise funds for our class, while furthering Goodwill's mission of enhancing the quality of life for people in our communities. We will be holding a Goodwill Donation and E-Waste Drive at STHS Visitor's Parking Lot (on Snell Ave.) on Sunday, January 21st 2018 from 10 AM-2PM. If you are unable to make it on the 21st, pre-collection is from Jan 15-Jan 18 and those donations will be accepted after school in the ASB room (803) until 4pm.

Attached below is a list of items that Goodwill accepts/reject for donation. Remember that you are helping a good cause and your donations make a major positive impact on our community and our environment. If we are able to fill up the 28" trailer, Goodwill will support the Class of 2020 and the school with a money grant of up to $1300. The sale of your donated items will provide them a “second life” at Goodwill’s stores, and help Goodwill provide job training, job placement and other great opportunities for people and families.

SPREAD THE WORD! Tell your friends, family members, co-workers and anyone you know to support the mission of Goodwill of Silicon Valley as well as the Santa Teresa Class of 2020 and participate in our donation drive. Money earned from this drive will go to upcoming fun and exciting activities for our class including the class wall, class bonding nights, spirit activities, Fantastiks, Homecoming Skit, and future events such as Junior Prom and RowdyRuff.

Thank you and we are highly looking forward to seeing you there!

Attention to AP Students and Parents!

Starting the week of January 16th, students will be able to purchase the 2018 AP Exams.  During this week the students will go to the school bank to purchase the exams during their AP classes.

The AP exams are $94 each.  If the student qualifies for Free and Reduced lunch, they need to provide a copy of their current letter from ESUHSD verifying this status and the cost of each exam is $5.

The school bank will accept cash or check, checks should be made out to Santa Teresa High School.

We would like most students to purchase exams this week so that we can start planning. The absolute last day to purchase AP exams will be March 9th 2018.

This is the time of holiday cheer and mostly GIVING!

As high school students, we might feel like we cannot contribute much to this season.

Fortunately, Macy’s holds a wonderful way of getting involved!

Every year, they encourage shoppers to write a letter to Santa! It could include your holiday wishes, a Christmas cheer, or a message of hope! Each letter Macy’s receives, they will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish Foundation! Please help make their wishes come true! Every dollar and letter counts! To write a letter, please click this URL https://www.macys.com/social/believe/?cm_mmc=VanityUrl-_-believe-_-n-_-n

or simply visit a local Macy’s to handwrite it! A letter can be written multiple times. Thank you for your kindness and please spread the word to your family and friends!

This year, students in the International Relations Club and California Scholarship Federation have asked that we renew our commitment to disadvantaged children within our community during this holiday season.  Traditionally, these clubs have focused on academics, but after our conference in Hawaii, our students asked for more opportunities to be more socially and emotionally connected to the school, and their community.  They have asked that we start a Toys for Tots Toy Drive as a club, and hoped that we can expand it to the rest of the school.  Last year we collected nearly 300 toys.  We hope to exceed that amount this year.

Please support us by communicating this to students in your class.  We will be delivering toys on Wednesday, December 20th (the Wednesday of Finals Week).  You can send unwrapped gifts to my room, 217, or I can send some of our students to pick them up from your room.

What can you donate?

  • Any new, unwrapped toy
  • Money
  • For girls and boys, ages 2-17
  • Appropriate toys:  Board games, athletic balls, books, music CDs, gift cards, Legos, action figures, NERF, pre-school learning toys, etc.,

Please avoid stuffed animals, plush toys, or video games (as they require a secondary console).

We have included a flyer for you to post in your classroom.

Please let us know if you have any questions.  We look forward to your support.  Our kids, your kids, are very excited to do this.

We wish you a very Merry Christmas, a stress free Finals Week, and a relaxing holiday break.

Best,

Bryan G. Phipps and Kaitlin Jenkins

This message is schedule to go out on Sunday, October 1st:

Hello, this is Ginny Davis, Associate Principal at Santa Teresa High School. I am calling to remind you that on Wednesday, October 11th, your 11th grade student will have the opportunity to take the PSAT. This test is an important step for any student thinking about applying to a four year university.

The PSAT is an opportunity for students to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. In addition, it offers them access to more than $160 million in scholarships from one of the largest scholarship provider pools in the country.

The PSAT is also a great way to practice and get familiar with the format of the SAT.  Your student's score can even generate a personalized SAT study plan on Khan Academy, which is completely free. Students who practiced with these tools for just 6-8 hours saw an average increase of 90 points from the PSAT to the SAT.

The cost of the PSAT is $15 and must be purchased in the counseling office by 4pm on Friday, October 6th.  We have a limited number of exams, so please do not wait to sign up as we may run out.

The following message was broadcast via Infinite Campus Messenger on Monday, September 4:

Good evening, this is Greg Louie, Principal of Santa Teresa High School with a reminder to our Senior families about the Senior College Going Presentation on Wednesday, September 6th at 6pm in the ST Theater.  During this presentation you and your student will learn what is required to apply to college.  This presentation by the ST Counseling staff will include the vast (and often confusing) differences between what is required when applying to the Community College System, to CSU's such as San Jose State University, UC's such as UCLA and UC Davis, Out of State Public Schools, such as Arizona State University, and Private College and Universities such as Stanford, Brown, and MIT.  If you student plans to attend ANY college next year, it is VITAL that you and your Senior student attend this presentation as there are required deadlines and school forms (that often include letters of recommendation) that MUST be filled out before students can apply.  We look forward to seeing you as this is a big step for you and your children and we want to support you in this process.

Thank you, and I hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend.

Hi all,

Students will be on campus Wednesday, August 2nd and Thursday, August 3rd to pick up their schedules, get their ID, and check out textbooks.  To make this work smoothly, we need help from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on both days.

We need volunteers assisting in the Multi Purpose Room handing out schedules and in the Resource Room 219 checking out textbooks.  You will be working with staff members who will explain the process.

Contact me to volunteer or with questions.

Thanks!

  • Participate in mentorship, internship, civic or community service opportunities

The above link has, in addition to the application itself, detailed information about the grant as well as a beautiful brochure you are welcome to print and distribute to your students. If you would like me to bring hardcopy brochures or to conduct a workshop to assist students wishing to apply for the grant please let me know.
